Chemistry

The Engineering chemistry I and II syllabus prescribed for study of I year B.E/B.Tech Engineering students of St.Peter's University during the year 2008-2009 comprises of 10 units. Advances in Chemical Applications and usage of newer technologies make study of chemistry very important .A few fields are worthy of mention.
Developments in the field of Nano particles now open up a new vista of applications:-
a) Light weight large capacity gas storage devices.
b) Hydrogen fuel cells with hydrogen stored in nano electrodes provide safe, lightweight batteries.
c) Nano tubes/ wires have many times the strength of equivalent steel wires in future may present replacement many applications.
d) Recent development of method for cheap synthesis- 1/20th of previous methods of graphene the base for the base for carbon nano materials- is an initiative in the right direction.
e) Medical applications delivering the required dose of medicine to the target only can be made possible.
Polymers proved to be a very widely used material for a variety of applications in present society. The development of biodegradable plastic and further studies on the same promise a real safe utility of polymer and plastics. At present the non biodegradable plastic is a big question mark on the use of polymers.
Lab Details
Green chemistry avoids use of hazardous chemicals and conventional energy sources. Now many important chemical agents can be manufactured with the green chemistry methods involving selected agents by ultrasound and microwave methods. This saves our energy sources and avoids hazards.
A better awareness and knowledge of environmental issues make it rather mandatory to use our present and ever widening frontiers of chemistry, specially in relation to pollution, fuel sources and their non conventional alternatives, water treatment organic farming. This will ensure a healthy satisfactory lifestyle to all members of the society in a congenial environment.
