Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary pursuit with transforming the scientific foundation into multidisciplinary applications. Humans are the ultimate beneficiaries of biotechnology. This may be through healthcare, transgenic plants, animals, pesticides, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, in vitro culture, etc.
St.Peter's University is the first self financing institution offering B.Tech Biotechnology in Tamil nadu since 2001. The department has well equipped laboratories like Molecular cell biology lab, Genetic Engineering lab, Bio instrumentation lab with modern equipments such as Gel Documentation, Phase contrast microscope, Fermentor, Fouier Transform- Infra Red Spectrophotometer, UV Spectrophotometer , ELISA Reader, Hybridization Oven, PCR, etc.
Every year national level seminars and symposium are conducted in the department. Industrial visit to reputed institutions are also arranged as a part of the curriculum. Biotechnology department has highly qualified and experienced faculty. Some of them are working on UGC, AICTE, TNSCST funded projects. M. Phil and Ph.D research programs are conducted in our department.
We are planning to join hands with well known research institutes and companies to carry out research jointly and establish on-the-job training centers for our students. Our students have already carried out projects and undergone training in well known institutes like center for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad., Dr Reddy's laboratories, Hyderabad., MSSRF, Chennai., CLRI, Chennai., Cancer institute, Chennai., Veterinary college, Chennai., S.V University Tirupathi, National Institute of Immunology, Delhi., Tuberculosis research centre, Chennai., Madurai Kamarajar university, Aravind Eye Hospitals, Madurai., NEERI, Nagpur.
The first batch is completing their course in May 2005 and most of them will be pursuing higher studies abroad as well as in our country. After completing B.Tech Biotechnology the students are eligible to pursue higher studies M.Tech./M.E. in Biotechnology, Biopharmaceutical Technology, Environmental Science & Technology, Environmental Management, Industrial safety Engg, and Environmental Engg & Management.
We equip our students for employment in various industrial and R&D Institutions:
